August 4th, Day 60 - Bandon Crossings, Bandon, OR                                                                                                             Drove 318 miles

It was a short drive up the coast to Bandon from Port Orford. Bandon is the home of the famous Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and Margaret & I played there, way back in 2007 when walking the golf course was easier and prices were not as steep there as they are now. You can't take a golf cart at any of the Bandon Dunes golf courses.

BUT YOU CAN at Bandon Crossings! We paid $ 99 each for green fees and cart. It would be a little stiff, price wise, except for the location and the cost of playing other golf courses (Bandon Dunes Resort courses are around $ 300 plus for a round this time of year, though quite a bit less in the winter months) in this area, so they get away with it. I have friends that have played here, said it was a fun course and so it is. 

The course is a mixture of links style golf and parkland golf. You get some of both on each nine. The first five holes are links holes and the you cross over to the forested parkland style holes on #6. The routing does not take you back to the clubhouse at the turn, but they have restroom facilities and a snack / beverage shop near the 6th and 14th tee areas. On number 15 you return to the open (but well bunkered!) links holes as you play your way back to the clubhouse / pro shop.

I shot a 93 with five pars, one lost ball, plus a ball in a water hazard, numerous sand shots and 5 unplayable lies. Four of the unplayables were on holes 12 & 13 where my swing disappeared. It came back on 14, but it's always a mystery as to where it goes from time to time. Margaret also shot a 93 with four pars.

This is a fun golf course to play and very pretty to boot! There are LOTS of deer out on the course and I'm sure that other fauna are frequent visitors, depending on the time of year. I might have given it 4 and a half rating except it IS a little overpriced in my view. 

I played the white tees at 5780 yards with a rating of 69.0 and a slope of 122. Margaret played 5005 yards with a rating of 70.4 and a slope of 123. The course can be a par 72 (it was this day) or 71 depending on which tee box they are using on # 5 which can be a par 5 or a par 4.

We drove north through Coos Bay, and turned east on OR HWY 38 at Reedsport. We traveled through the mountains until we hit I-5 then headed north to our Kelso/Longview destination. Portland traffic is ALWAYS a bitch, and today was no different, but at least we weren't stuck in rush hour traffic.

We checked into our motel and were able to walk to the nearby Fiesta Bonita restaurant. The food was good and the margaritas even better!
