Day 20 Sand Creek Station, Newton Kansas
3/27 - Day 20 Sand Creek Station, Newton Kansas
I played golf at Sand Creek Station in Newton, KS, this day. I had a 9:18 tee time and was joined by Preston a late 30's local guy who LOVES golf and his son Tyler rode with him for the front nine.
I had a bad front 9 as I couldn't seem to do anything right on a couple of holes, and found no consistency until we made the turn. Shot a 45 (par 36) on the back and anytime I play a new course I think bogey golf is good, for me. Preston was better on the front and much less consistent on the back. He's a nice young man & I enjoyed the conversation and golfing with him.
This is a GREAT golf course, my second favorite of the trip (after Yocha DeHe in California). It has bunkers that you can avoid, water hazards, greens with distinct levels (better be on the right one!) and the greens were smooth and fast. There is a train track that runs through a part of the golf course (no, not through a hole!) and I'll bet there were at least 8 crossings during the four hour round (we were behind a foursome).
The course was dry enough it wasn't cart paths only, another plus. Because of the social distancing mandate, I didn't really get to see much of the inside of the clubhouse. Preston said they have league golf with 8 players on every hole (they play 9 holes) once a week. That's what we used to have at the CDA Public for most of the years I was there except we had 10 players on every hole.
I had planned to go to Colorado after golf, play there the next day and then go to Utah to play on the way home. The weather forecast was awful so I bagged that idea. I still went to Colorado after golf, a little more than a 7 hour drive from Newton, via I-70, a short day compared to Saturday.
