Day 9 San Ignacio, driving to Las Cruces & Chillitos

3/16  - Day 9 San Ignacio, driving to Las Cruces & Chillitos

Doug Mattoon, Robin (Doug's sister), her husband Scott & I convened at San Ignacio Golf Club in Green Valley for a round of golf this beautiful Arizona Tuesday morning. None of us had ever played this course before and everyone agreed they would enjoy playing it again when we were finished.

Robin hits the ball pretty well. She and Scott are both pretty good putters, at least on this day. Doug played OK on the front and pretty well on the back. I started out hitting the ball well, but never could make a putt (42 PUTTS!) which is usually the better portion of my game. Not much to say except I enjoyed the company & the golf course, but hated the way I scored.

It's easy to recommend this golf course. It has a nice variety of holes and challenges without being too penal and the yardage we played (6298, slope of 125) didn't seem too long for anyone. If you get down near Tucson (and you're a golfer!) make sure and give it a go.

After golf I set out for Las Cruces, NM.  This will be the first state on my journey that I had never visited before.  It's an easy drive through the desert with a few little towns along the way, but not much scenery. There ARE warning signs of sandstorm possibilities along the way. I can understand why as there is NOTHING to slow the wind down for many a mile.

As you get closer to Las Cruces. The mountains to the northeast of town rise up out of the ground from nowhere and provide a spectacular backdrop to the city and a barrier from weather coming from that direction. There are mountains popping up out of nowhere in the greater Phoenix area too, but this is a much wider range than the ones I have seen there.

Checked in to my motel and asked about places to eat nearby. The desk clerk told me "Chillitos" had great Mexican food and I could walk to it, only one long block down the road. The food WAS great, probably the best I had on the whole trip. Margaret would not have appreciated the spiciness or heat in the dish I ordered, but I thought it was perfect.

The first picture is the 18th hole at San Ignacio. I hit a very good third shot into this green, BUT it was about half a yard long into the back fringe, landed on a sprinkler head, bounded high over the green and was never seen again! It sort of described my golf day in one shot.

Doug, Robin & Scott and yours truly are the other two pictures, at San Ignacio.
