Days 5 (A Travel Day) & 6 (Rain, Rain Go Away, & don't come back til I'm out of here!)
3/12 & 3/13 - Days 5 & 6 A Travel Day & Rain, Rain Go Away, & don't come back 'til I'm out of here!
Day 5 was always meant to be a travel day. Started in Reno and drove to Mesquite, 7 hours plus of driving. I will say that western Nevada is not quite as boring to look at as central (Hwy 93) Nevada is, but there are a helluva a lot of miles with nothing but sagebrush.
There are miles and miles and miles in Nevada where you can't get cell service OR an FM or AM radio station. That's just weird. I drove 99 miles on the "Extraterrestrial Highway" (Nevada 375) between HWY 6 & US 93 and I swear I only saw two cars! Lots of free range cattle though, & what I THINK are stunted palm trees.
I screwed up the date of my motel in Mesquite, so I didn't have a room and opted to go on to St. George, Utah and spend the night. I lost an hour in the process and it's a good thing I'm used to fasting because I went 12 waking hours without eating.
Huge lightning / rain storm in St. George. It continued on into the morning and though Day 6 was supposed to be a golf day, the forecast wasn't calling for it to stop. The golf course had puddles all over it and wouldn't have been any fun so I took off for Flagstaff. I have already scoped out 2 courses as the possible replacement for my Utah golf course. Both are near Logan (and therefore near Pocatello, not far from my chosen route!) and looks like either would be a good course to play.
Originally I was going to Colorado next, but the rain storm that hit southern Utah was a snowstorm in south western Colorado so I aborted that leg of the trip. I actually got a little snow on the way to Flagstaff while in south central Utah. I will have two more chances to play in Colorado, but someday I want to play this Conquistador golf course in Cortez, Co. I probably will, maybe with Margaret!
I am staying in a dive (had to change plans & only here for the night) on "Historic Route 66". There is a Dutch Brothers (my favorite coffee, Americano, no ice, black!) next to my freeway on-ramp so that will make the morning's drive to Casa Grande a bit better off the git-go. I hope the Italian place just down the road I have chosen for my evening meal makes me as happy as the Dutch Bros. does!
I was working on this in the afternoon in my motel room and when I went out I had an 1 1/2 to 2 inches of snow on my car. Didn't see that coming!
Happy to say "Fat Olives" the wood fired pizza / Italian food place down the road where I ate: WINNER! It is on "historic" Route 66 (as is my motel). This is a Diners, Drive Ins & Dives place and it's really good. I had a bacon marmalade pizza (yummy!) and a couple of Pie Hole Porters from Historic Brewing. It's a cherry/vanilla porter (a first for me and better than it might sound!) and besides the great flavor, the body of the porter was perfect. This is a place Margaret & I can eat after we play Conquistador or just the next time we drive down to Phoenix / Scottsdale again for spring golf, one of these years.
No Pictures today!
