(June 21st) Day 16 – Calvert City, KY drove 286 miles

No golf today as the predicted rainstorm (monsoon!!!) showed up. It was coming down in buckets and driving was a stressful experience today. At least I wasn’t on a motorcycle trip like the couple I passed hanging out beneath an overpass. When I got to Calvert City there were two other couples on bikes hanging out under the gas station canopy. It was full speed windshield wipers and that was barely enough. I made it a point to drive near the rumble strip in case I lost traction (I never did!) because you wouldn’t want to try and brake, just foot off the accelerator and find traction.

When I left Indianapolis, it wasn’t raining there and entering Kentucky I had (false) hope I might be able to play golf after all. The farther south I went the clouds kept darkening and when I hit the rain it was really coming down in sheets. The golf course here in Calvert City was flooded when I drove by it to see if tomorrow was a possibility. I think not!

I was too early to check into my hotel, so I went to buy a pint of bourbon (I’m in Kentucky, right!) and was pleased to find some Washington State (Columbia Valley) wines in the liquor store. This is a very small town and the golf course appears to be its centerpiece. That is what brought me here. There are few restaurants, 2 motels and I only saw one grocery store.

Margaret doesn’t like Cracker Barrel and I had never eaten at one, so she advised me to try their fried chicken. I don’t know what the rest of the menu is like, but their “Southern Fried Chicken” is really lousy, in my opinion, and I won’t ever feel the need to try it again.

Because of the hard and widespread rain, I am scrambling to find a place to play tomorrow, in Kentucky or possibly Tennessee. IF I play the Legacy Golf Course in Springfield, TN (north of Nashville) I will skip driving up to Nashville on the way back. It is the one I most wanted to play in that area and skipping Nashville will get me home a couple of days earlier. Right now that sounds great!

I was in the Eastern Time Zone in Michigan & Indiana, but back in Central Time today. After today, I will be in Eastern time until I get to Mississippi on the way back west. It doesn’t seem like much, but figuring out when to call home is slightly tricky considering Margaret’s busy schedule and my agenda. We talk every day and yesterday she took Ivan (our cat) to the vet for a blood draw so they could check his thyroid levels. He is actually quite healthy for an eighteen year old, he just sleeps A LOT! This was good news for me as I will be happy to see him again.

No golf, No pictures, just a map!
