(June 28th) Day 23 – Martindale Country Club, Auburn, ME drove 200 miles
Martindale CC is located in Auburn, Maine, almost 50 miles north of Biddeford. The course has four sets of tees (and one combo set) ranging from 6538 to 4793 yards. I played the green tees at 6267 yards with a slope of 132 and a course rating of 71.0. It is a par 71 golf course.
There was a shotgun start event at the golf course and I was the first to tee off after the golfers cleared the course. The first hole is a straight up hill 325 yard hole and the rest of the front nine is not nearly as severely sloped except #9 which is a steep downhill par 3. I actually played pretty good golf on the front nine and was at even bogies when I made the turn.
Teeing off on #10 proved to be interesting as the local band (They were pretty good!) that was playing for the event and auction they were having, was basically pointing in my direction when I made the turn. I hit my worst tee shot of the day (to that point) and just messed up the first six holes of the back nine in general. The back nine has tighter looks than the front and more hazards to consider. Being a mental midget, I let it affect me and if I hadn't finished with three straight bogies I would have ended up over the century mark. Ten shots worse on the back, YUK!
Overall I like the golf course, but I think the fee is a little high for the quality of the maintenance at 78.50 for green fees and cart (on a Monday). I would play it again, and I'm sure the fees are lower in the shoulder (non tourist times!) season.
While I waited in the lounge for the shotgun event to clear the course, I had a wonderful lunch and highly recommend the food at this club. Auburn is off the beaten path, but it was a pretty enough drive and I am glad that I went there.
After golf I drove back to New Hampshire, just a little bit south of where I had stayed the night before. Next golf stop, Massachusetts!
