(June 30th) Day 25 – Green Valley Country Club Portsmouth, RI drove 195 miles
Green Valley Country Club has four sets of tees ranging from 6830 to 5447. I played the 6091 tees with a rating of 68.8 and a slope of 121. The starter was also the pro shop (kind of) and he charged me a senior 9 hole fee so cart and green fee was $ 47. Normally the fee would be $ 62 and I think that would be quite reasonable for this golf course. It was a hot & humid day and his rational for the undercharge was nobody was out on the course, but there were folks out there, cause I caught them on the tenth hole. I did NOT complain about the reduced green fee, however. BTW, Senior green fees are one of the BEST perks about getting older.
I enjoyed the course and played pretty well except for one big screwup on the front and another one on the back. It's not a flat course, but the rolling hills have gentle slopes and I did see some folks walking. The maintenance was good, not great. This was a rare course as I COULD read the greens, something I find far more difficult to do on steep courses. I actually had 6 one putts on this course and at 31 putts, it was easily the fewest on any course so far this trip (as of 7/10 when I am writing this). I definitely recommend this golf course (& bar/restaurant).
After golf I went into the lounge, had a Yuengling and a chorizo grinder for a late lunch. It was OUTSTANDING, one of the best things I have eaten on this trip. Another thing in this course's favor was the large gathering of kids taking group golf lessons, the biggest group I had seen since Iowa. All in all a great day.
Next stop is Connecticut and I drove to Meriden where I would do the unusual, spend consecutive nights at the same hotel. I drove east of my hotel to a place called Zorbas, a Greek restaurant. I enjoy Greek food, but they were in the process of re-staffing and had three new waitresses working the their first day/night there. The one that served me didn't know the menu and though my food was good, it was NOT what I ordered so I was a bit disappointed. The have an in house bakery with some REALLY good looking desserts and after I pick Margaret up at the airport tomorrow, I will stop by the place again, and get a couple of desserts for take out.
