August 2nd, Day 58 - Foxtail GC South course & North course, Rohnert Park, CA                                                                  Drove 9 miles (actually Margaret drove 3 of them!)

Margaret & I drove the lengthy 1.5 mile trip to the golf course and set out to play the South course at Foxtail, which I had booked online. This is a good golf course in poor condition. I don't know if it was because of the sprinkler system, not enough sunlight, whatever, the turf was bad, particularly on the front nine. The back nine was much better, but by then my impression of the golf course had been formed. The south course was busy, despite its condition and we were paired with a couple of Korean ladies and you could tell they didn't like the idea much. Mi Jin and Tina (who was the friendly one) quit their round after three holes. We were waiting on a foursome of men in front of us, but it really wasn't going that slowly so I figured Mi JIn just didn't want to play with us. 

The course is fairly flat and would be an easy walk for any walkers. At least half of the people on this course were walking. The greens were very good, but the fairways and tee boxes were pretty ratty. The temperature was actually cool in the morning, the first time I had played in the cool weather in almost two months.

The golf course is a par 71 and 400 yards longer on my back nine, 300 yards longer for Margaret. The extra distance didn't bother her. She shot the same score on both sides, but I shot 41 on the front and 46 on the back. Her tees were 5343 yards, rating 70.3 and slope of 117. My tees were 5830 with a rating of 68.38 and a slope of 120. There is a fair amount of water on this course and a lot of trees. We didn't hate the course, it's actually kind of pretty in spots, but the maintenance left a lot to be desired.

After golf we grabbed a bite in the bar and after Rick & Doug showed up, Margaret went back to the hotel. We became a foursome on the North course when Brian joined us. All of us played the white tees at 5856 yards, rating of 68.5 and slope of 121. Margaret would've played the golds at 5261 yards , rating 69.6 and a slope of 119. The longest tees are 6851, rating 73.0 and slope of 133, TOUGH! The North course is a par 72 layout.

It was also in very good condition. Cart and green fee was $ 48 on the North as opposed to $ 42 on the South course. Doug may never read this, but he picked up my green fee and I thanked him for that.

The North course was in MUCH better shape. This course has lots of doglegs and sand, a fair amount water and trees, lots of trees. I played the front nine in 45 shots with three pars and improved to 41 on the back nine where I had three fewer putts and five pars. A very good day for me to shoot below 90 on two courses I have never played before. Would've been even better had I not hit two balls in water hazards. I didn't have any lost balls on the South course. 

Margaret was in the parking lot when we were done and we invited Rick & Doug back to the hotel. Due to staff shortages, the bar was closed, but they let us drink our Yuenglings in the sitting area of the lobby. Now I know Rick usually has more than one beer, but they had a ways to drive to get back home and thought it best to get going.

Margaret & I went for dinner at Bear Republic, a brew pub, almost right across the street from the golf course. The food was good and I bought a six pack of their porter to bring home as the one I had with dinner was really good. There was a smattering of people in the restaurant / bar area, it was not yet six o'clock when we sat down to eat. An employee started a trivia game, and while I said we would play I wasn't really that interested. When she started asking the questions, they were more our generation questions than there were for the younger people. The questions were SO obscure I only knew the answer to one of them and pretty sure everybody else was having the same problem. 

Back to the hotel and another driving only day tomorrow. I like this town and would certainly come here again. There is also a casino here that Rick & Doug had both been to, but neither had played the golf courses before. When the golf courses were built it was called Mountain Shadows. I don't know how long the Foxtail name has been around.
